 Scout Advancement Record

  Section

In Scouting, recognition is gained through leadership in the unit; attending and participating in the activities; living the ideals of Scouting; and developing a proficiency in outdoor life, useful skills, and career exploration.

 Advancement

Advancement is the process by which youth members of the Boy Scouts of America progress from rank to rank in the Scouting program. Advancement is simply a means to an end, not an end in itself. Everything done to advance and earn these ranks, from joining until leaving the program, should be designed to help the young person have an exciting and meaningful experience.

Scouts are strongly encouraged to plan far enough ahead of time with their advancement that they have completed the necessary requirements for each rank and merit badge.

  • Rank Advancement: When a Scout is ready to complete a requirement in each of the 6 advancement stages after completing the "Scout Badge"  he must contact the Scoutmaster or the Scoutmaster's designated Assistant Scoutmaster or Committee Member to be reviewed that he has successfully completed the requirement.  The Scout must demonstrate that he has a thorough understanding and can successfully complete any skills of  the requirement or requirements, he also understands that just learning how is not the end, he should continually hone is skills of each requirement of each rank.  (knots, ropes, fire building, cooking, orienteering, etc).

  • When a scout is ready to advance to the next rank, The Scout first needs to see the advancement Chairman himself to verify his records are up to date and that he has completed all the necessary requirements.  The Advancement Chairman will forward the scouts information to the Scoutmaster.

  • After the above step has been completed the Scout must contact the Scoutmaster himself to schedule a Scoutmaster's Conference.  Do not expect the Scoutmaster to schedule a conference on the day you request it, although he may wish to do so.  Please allow at least two weeks for the conference to be scheduled.

  • After the Scoutmaster's conference, the Scout himself should then schedule a Board of Review with the Advancement Chairman.  The Board of Review should be scheduled at least one week in advance so the Chairman can coordinate for appropriate Board of Review members to be present.

  • Merit Badges...The Scout himself must make the contact to the Merit Badge Counselor, He also must research "WHO" the counselor is.  In essence the Scout makes the phone calls, sends the e-mails, makes the arrangements to meet with the Counselor (with a buddy) the Scout does it all.  Counselors generally refer any parent making contact back to having the Scout do this.  This is how Scouting works...it's Boy Scouts!

  • NOTE ON MERIT BADGES & ADVANCEMENT: as listed in the above procedures emphasis is placed on the scout to do the work himself.  Parents do not sign off on advancement it will not be credited.  Parents do not sign off on Merit Badges unless they are counseling a group.

  • As you can see this process may take several weeks to complete

  • Plan

  • Practice

  • Be Prepared

Don't wait until the last minute to start this process...It won't happen!
